ABOUT SCARBOROUGH ART
Scarborough Art is a festival where you can immerse yourself in art and discover work from the local creative community. Taking place from Saturday 11 October – Sunday 21 December at various venues and open studios across Scarborough, you can expect a wide range of media to be showcased, from paintings and sculpture to photography and printmaking.
This festival is perfect for art lovers of all ages to enjoy days filled with creativity and inspiration. Come and celebrate the rich artistic heritage of Scarborough and find the hidden gems waiting to be uncovered. As well as exhibitions, several artists and makers across the town will be hosting workshops for visitors to take part in and create art of their own.

Exhibitions
Unsettled Grounds
11 October – 2 November, Old Parcels Office
An exhibition of 12 artists exploring northern urban and rural landscapes through painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and installation – showcasing both established names and exciting emerging talent.
Furry Friends
24 October – 2 November, Studio 49
Mary-Ann Stevens presents a playful exhibition of dogs and cats, featuring her latest quirky sculptures alongside paintings, drawings, and works by local artists. A joyful celebration for art lovers and animal enthusiasts alike.
From Darkroom to Digital
26 October – 21 December, Arnison Studios
A display of mainly black and white representational photographs spanning five decades, with a sprinkling of experimental abstract colour images.
INTO THE LIGHT: The Pioneers of Black British Ballet
4 – 27 November, Scarborough Library – Community Space
A ground-breaking exhibition celebrating trailblazing black dancers. The exhibition will be accompanied by performances of Island Movements, an original Windrush-themed ballet, this autumn. There will also be dance, writing and photography workshops, talks, panel events and a virtual exhibition by Birmingham Open Media that will include a motion capture ballet performance.
Last Chance Salo(o)n
14 – 16 November, Old Parcels Office
A final retrospective exhibition of ceramic works over the years, much of it influenced by the sea, seen for the very last time. Lesley Warner will be closing her ceramics studio at the end of November and is joined by three other artists – Lizzie Sky Hall, Salona and Trish Shaw.
Emergence
18 – 22 November, St Martin-on-the-Hill
A drop-in immersive exhibition, where you are invited to sit and be with intuitive art and see where it takes you. There is also the opportunity to write, draw or express how you have been touched and together create something new.
Trees
27 November – 7 December, Aakschipper Images Gallery
A photographic exhibition celebrating the look and details of trees, from their root structure to the twisted gnarled trunks, to their fallen leaves. A photographic exhibition that reminds us of the majesty and beauty of the everyday trees that surround us.
Yorkshire Coast Makers Christmas Artisan Fair
29 November, Queen Street Methodist Central Hall
A curated festive shopping event event showcasing high-quality handmade products from a diverse range of creatives across the North Yorkshire Coast. An ideal opportunity to meet those behind the work and make a special purchase.
Installations
No Place Like Home
22 October – 21 December, Dress Circle
Wizard of Oz-inspired art deco cut-out large window display sculpture, viewed from the street, that by day is jolly and at night is Wicked!
Open Studio
OPO Artists Winter Open Studios
414 November 4-7pm; 15 November 12-5pm, Old Parcels Office
Meet the artists in their studios at the Old Parcels Office, explore recent work and working practices across painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, photography and much much more.
Captain Ants & Art_Grita Open Studio
11 October – 21 December, West Pier Studios
Captain Ants & Art_Grita welcome you to view their award winning Studio Space and their Artworks and meet the Artists. All artworks on display are available for purchase.
Lynne Arnison
12 October – 21 December, Arnison Studios
Lynne’s artist gallery studio displaying work in oil, gouache and tinted charcoal. Her work documents figurative and architectural aspects of Scarborough from a resident’s viewpoint capturing subjects that are sometimes overlooked.
Street Art
Highway
13 – 31 October, Scarborough Market Hall
Highway is a mural on the under side of a staircase at Scarborough Market Hall. Reflecting and referencing the No Stairway mural above, Community suggestions of details to include will be welcome during the mural painting, and musical influences will be there to decode.
Mural Club – No 4
23 November, Mandy Apple
Local artist Mary Naylor will lead participants through the process of painting a mural on a wall in Mandy Apple. A project designed to transform spaces, connect people, encourage pride in surroundings, whilst building confidence in artists of all abilities.
Talks & Workshops
Felt Pennant Flag-Making with Hannah Grahamslaw
27 – 31 October, Glass Box
Hannah Grahamslaw is running drop-in felt pennant flag-making workshop at the glass box gallery on St Helen’s Square. Suitable for all ages, 10-3 daily.
Spooky Spells & Tricky Tales
30 October, Beeforth’s Hive
A storytelling/ craft workshop that is gently spooky for Halloween. Come and hear seasonal stories on the half hour and make a ghost lantern to take home. This is a free event for all families with primary age children.
Calling all Atlanteans…
2 November, Scarborough Art Gallery
This is to be an experience of sound from a deeper place to help us embody what we experience here into the everyday.
Painted Poetry
29 November, Beeforth’s Hive
Join artist Louise Bass and poet Charlotte Oliver for a fun yet focussed workshop during which you will be gently guided to write a lovely poem and then produce a beautiful painted picture of it. No experience necessary, just a willingness to be creative!
Stitching the Meaning of Colour
5 December, Gallery 33
Discover the power of colour in this hands-on workshop, blending stitching, collage, and washi paper. Enjoy a mindful, creative space to explore cultural meanings, spark inspiration, and express your own artistic voice — with all materials included.
Jewellery Making Craft Event
14 December, Beeforth’s Hive
Jewellery making workshop for families in the morning. And in the afternoon an adult workshop both creating a Christmas themed jewellery piece which they can either keep for themselves or as a gift. Each session will run as a drop in session all welcome to each event.

WORKSHOPS
Scarborough Art is not just about viewing work – you can also make some by taking part in one (or more) of the workshops on offer. If you’ve ever wanted to make something but don’t know where to start look at the Home Spun Printmaking Workshops and create a work using recycled materials. Get creative with leftover fabric with Material Moves and make accessories to take home with you. At the Mixed Media Print Workshops you might create a complete piece of work or experiment with several new techniques. Finally – SHEP Kitchen are thinking about art in a completely different way and inviting you to make a masterpiece in the kitchen, combining both art and food.
INSTALLATION
Two immersive installations are being created for the festival. In St Mary’s Church, Birds of Heart and Sky by composer Sarah Dew celebrates vulnerable birds. Animated Objects are creating Touch Tour, an interactive tactile mural throughout the town.
PHOTOGRAPHY AND PRINT WORK
Go on Celestial Adventures with Astro Dog at Electric Angel Gallery through a night photography and astrophotography exhibition. Learn more about photography yourself on a Photography Walk with Wandering Photography. Or head to the SeaGrown Centre at Vincent Pier to see an exhibition of their Artist of the Month.
VISUAL ART
A feast for the eyes as artists fill Scarborough with artwork in venues of all shapes and sizes. Exhibitions will feature abstract paintings, mixed media work, landscapes, glass art, textiles, drawing, sculpture and much more.
With work based on diverse themes from social history and environmental sustainability to space and comic books, there will be something for everyone to enjoy and engage with.
For some of these exhibitions, artists are opening up their studios and in some cases their homes to give you a look inside the space where their creativity flourishes. Other venues include established galleries as well as new spaces opening for the first time this year.
