Winter Lights Festival

15 November 2024 - 22 December 2024

Glass and light installation for the window of Gallery 33 to celebrate the Gallery’s community of artists and their diverse range of creativity that appeals to a wide variety of people.

The window will be inspired by winter with its connotations of hibernation, slowing, retreating, nurturing, waiting and the winter light festival to celebrate the end of the dark and the return of the light. Participating artists would be:

- Tanja Entwistle, with glasswork of Nordic inspired Christmas trees and winter panels;

- Estar May with paintings inspired by memories of the energy of stormy winter sea and sky;

- Andrew Cheetham with atmospheric landscape paintings where light is frozen in time;

- Sue Wilmington with winter festival and theatre inspired painting and printmaking;

- Adam King with Scarborough, sea and stained glass inspired paintings.

The work will be set in the window of Gallery 33 and lit 24 hours a day by a curtain of light and available for everyone to come and see through November and December, without needing to rely on the opening hours of the Gallery.  The installation will include one or two pieces of work each by the Gallery 33 participating artists with their own unique interpretation of winter light festival. Using the curtain of lights will enable the installation to remain lit from behind in the afternoon and at night creating a lantern effect with the light transmitting through the glass and enabling all work to remain lit.

The window will coincide with a social event to celebrate the Scarborough Lights Festival and a new pop-up exhibition in the gallery called Christmas Jewells an exhibition of Kivi tealight holders, vintage and collectable.
